Hungarian Cellist Miklós Perényi was Born in 1948
Perényi is a professor at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, whose faculty he first joined in 1974
Born on January 5, 1948, into a musical family, Miklós Perényi began learning the cello with Miklós Zsámboki (a student of David Popper), and attended the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, and the Accademia Santa Cecilia, where he studied with Ede Banda and Enrico Mainardi, respectively.
After winning the 1963 Pablo Casals International Violoncello Competition when he was 15, Perényi pursued advanced cello studies with Pablo Casals. He later played at the Marlboro Festival for four consecutive years.
As an educator, Perényi became a lecturer in 1974 at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music and was appointed professor in 1980. Alongside his teaching commitments, he continues to perform internationally with acclaimed orchestras.
His discography includes Beethoven's complete catalogue for cello and piano recorded with his close chamber music partner, pianist András Schiff. Also a composer, Perényi has written for solo cello and instrumental ensembles of various sizes.
Perényi's artistry extends to recitals at the Theatre de la Ville in Paris, where he is a regular guest, captivating audiences with solo and chamber music performances. In 2014, he was appointed The Royal Northern College of Music's International Chair in Cello.
Among his many awards are the Kossuth and Bartók-Pásztory Prizes, the title of the Artist of the Nation, and France's prestigious Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
