The New York Philharmonic today rehearsing in advance of the world premiere performance of eminent American composer Philip Glass’ newly-commissioned ‘King Lear Overture‘.

Commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, the new 10-minute work will be premiered on the 18th of September at New York’s David Geffen Hall – lead by conductor Jaap van Zweden.

“The King Lear Overture was conceived after the extended time I spent with the play in its Broadway presentation this last year …” the 82-year-old minimalist-movement composer has said.

“However, it is musically a completely new version of this subject matter … were it to become an actual opera, the new thematic material for this new work is actually contained in this Overture,” he has said.
