The New York Philharmonic today rehearsing in advance of the world premiere performance of eminent American composer Philip Glass’ newly-commissioned ‘King Lear Overture'.
Commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, the new 10-minute work will be premiered on the 18th of September at New York's David Geffen Hall - lead by conductor Jaap van Zweden.
“The King Lear Overture was conceived after the extended time I spent with the play in its Broadway presentation this last year ...” the 82-year-old minimalist-movement composer has said.
“However, it is musically a completely new version of this subject matter ... were it to become an actual opera, the new thematic material for this new work is actually contained in this Overture,” he has said.
