American virtuoso, pedagogue and conductor Oscar Shumsky died on this day in 2000 – aged 83.

Mr Shumsky served distinguished teaching positions at the Curtis Institute of Music, Peabody Conservatory, Yale University and The Juilliard School.

For much of his career he concertized on the 1715 ‘Ex-Pierre Rode’ Stradivarius.
