OUT NOW | Violinist Jenna Sherry's New CD: "Brahms & Dohnányi Violin Sonatas"
Recorded with pianist Dániel Lowenberg, the disc features rare violin versions of Brahms' Sonata in F minor Op. 120 No. 1, Sonata in E flat major Op. 120 No. 2, and Dohnányi's Sonata in C sharp minor Op. 21
Bmc Records announced the release of American violinist Jenna Sherry's new album: "Brahms and Dohnányi Sonatas for Violin and Piano."
"The original inspiration for this recording was getting to know Dohnányi's wonderful and mercurial, but rarely played sonata," said Sherry. "Dániel Lőwenberg and I fell head-over-heels for this sonata when we first started playing it, but there is also a deep and intuitive musical connection with Brahms. Brahms championed the young Dohnányi's first piano quintet in Vienna, and in these sonatas, it feels as if Dohnányi's musical language picks up where Brahms left off.
"Not many people know that the Brahms Op. 120 Sonatas were originally published for violin in addition to the famous versions for clarinet and viola. These works have since been mostly forgotten by violinists, so the opportunity to discover this music from a fresh perspective and to explore the distinct voices of the clarinet, viola, and violin that are embedded in the music, was irresistible and thrilling.
"I hope listeners will enjoy discovering Dohnáyi's enchanting sound world as much as we did. I also hope that this unfamiliar version of Brahms's Op. 120 Sonatas will spark curiosity and conversation about how we play and hear Brahms's music."
