Decca Classics has today announced the international digital release of Australian violinist, VC Artist Ray Chen's new album: 'Solace'.
Recorded professionally from his own living room, in Philadelphia during quarantine, the disc features Ray's personal selection from Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin.
“I selected six of Bach’s movements that I feel represent the personal and powerful feelings I have felt and experienced this year so far during the COVID-19 pandemic ... " Ray has today told The Violin Channel.
“The 'Preludio' from Bach’s E Major Partita represents my initial joy and connection to 2020 ... the 'Fugue' from Bach’s G Minor Sonata then takes me into my sense of meandering and searching for truth through a filter of anxious worry ... the D Minor 'Sarabande' represents the senses of darkness, vulnerability and loneliness I've experienced ... the A Minor 'Allegro' signifies the frustration of trying to find an end to all of this ... and finally the delicate C Major 'Largo' and the E Major 'Gavotte en Rondeau' evoke for me my current feelings of hopefulness of a possible return ..." he has said.
“My mentor Christoph Eschenbach once told me, ‘Music when it repeats itself, cannot be played the same because by then you are already a few seconds older and wiser’ .... certain events have the power to change the way we look at the world forever - and music certainly has that same.”
