American cellist Marc Johnson, from the famed Vermeer String Quartet, has passed away.

A student of Carol Work, Ronald Leonard and Janos Starker, he served with the Vermeer String Quartet from 1969 until the ensemble's retirement in 2008.

Our condolences are with Mr Johnson's family, friends, students and colleagues.
