Italian operatic tenor Luciano Pavarotti is renowned as one of the greatest bel canto opera singers of the 20th century. His voice was celebrated for its pure tone even in the highest register. His concerts, recordings, and television appearances, which showcased his vibrant personality, earned him a broad and devoted following.
In 1968, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera and from 1971 he was a regular performer there. Among his many prizes and awards were five Grammy Awards and a Kennedy Center Honor in 2001.
He passed away from pancreatic cancer – aged 71.
