The Hague's Residentie Orkest Appoints New Chief Conductor
Conductor Jun Märkl will step into the role in 2025, for an initial term of four seasons
German-Japanese conductor Jun Märkl has served as the Residentie Orkest's permanent Guest Conductor since 2021. He will step into his new position as Chief Conductor at the Hague at the opening of the 2025/26 season, succeeding Anja Bihlmaier. Märkl will serve an initial term of four seasons.
A past student of Sergiu Celibidache, Leonard Bernstein, and Seiji Ozawa, among others, Jun Märkl has conducted orchestras such as the Munich Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Tonhalle Zürich, and the Oslo Philharmonic.
He has been chief conductor of the Orchestre National de Lyon and the MDR-Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, among others. Märkl is currently Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, Artistic Advisor of the Indianapolis Symphony, and Principal Guest Conductor of the Oregon Symphony.
"After many years of inspiring music-making with the wonderful musicians of the Residentie Orkest, I am very excited to expand and strengthen our relationship," said Jun Märkl. "I am looking forward to working closely with Sven Arne Tepl and his team, with Richard Egarr and Chloe Rooke to further deepen the broad profile of a dedicated, passionate and high quality orchestra in and outside The Hague."
"We are delighted that one of the most experienced conductors on the international circuit is joining the Residentie Orkest as chief conductor," said Sven Arne Tepl, general and artistic director of the Residentie Orkest. "We look forward to continuing and further intensifying our long-standing relationship with Jun and Richard, to the beginning of permanent collaboration with Chloe and, of course, to continuing the great work with Anja for the next season and a half."
