The Winners and Grinners — 2022 International Prize Winners [CONGRATS]

As the year 2022 comes to a close, we take a look back at the year’s major international competition prize winners and grant recipients

 

Congratulations to the following winners:

VC Artist Inmo Yang was awarded first prize at the 2022 Jean Sibelius International Violin Competition.

VC Artist Timothy Chooi was awarded The Juilliard School’s Norman Benzaquen Career Advancement Prize.

VC Young Artist Johan Dalene won Young Artist of the Year at the UK’s Gramophone Classical Music Awards.

Violinist Randall Goosby, VC Young Artist cellist Jonathan Swensen, saxophonist Steven Banks, percussionist Ji Su Jung, and pianist Mackenzie Melemed were recipients of the 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grants.

VC Young Artist Sirena Huang was awarded the Gold Medal at the 2022 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis (IVCI).

VC Artist Dmytro Udovychenko was awarded first prize at the 2022 Singapore International Violin Competition.

South Korean violinist Jaewon Wee was first-prize winner of the 2022 Ysaÿe International Music Competition.

Guido Felipe Sant’Anna e Silva placed first at the Fritz Kreisler International Violin Competition.

Violinist Hina Maeda was awarded first prize at the 2022 Wieniawski Violin Competition.

Romanian violinist Maria Marica received first prize at the 2022 violin edition of the George Enescu International Competition.

Cellist Benjamin Kruithof was awarded first place at the 2022 cello division of the George Enescu International Competition.

Violinist Daniel Matejča was awarded first prize at the 2022 Eurovision Young Musicians Competition, representing the Czech Republic.

Ukrainian violinist Bohdan Luts received first prize and the audience prize at the Alberto Lysy International Violin Competition.

Violinist Arlan Vriens received the 2022 Emerging Artist Award from the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation

American violinist Daniel Bae was awarded first-prize at the Stulberg International String Competition.

Violinist Jinan Laurentia Woo, violist Seoyeon Ryu, and cellist Luka Coetzee were first-prize winners at the Johansen International Competition. 

Violinists Lilja Haatainen, Anton Carus, and Alexandra Weissbecker won first prize in their respective age categories at the 2022 International Louis Spohr Competition for Young Violinists.

Violinists Tao Baiyi, Leonhard Baumgartner, and Lorenz Karls were first-prize winners in their respective age categories at the 2022 Zhuhai International Mozart Competition.

Violinists Hans Christian Aavik and Bohdan Luts were joint first-prize winners at the Carl Nielsen Violin Competition.

Violinist Ruslan Talas from Kazakhstan was awarded first prize at Italy’s Lipizer International Violin Competition and at the Inaugural 2022 WorldVision Online Music Contest.

Violinist Brandon Du was awarded first prize in the senior category of the Chicago Violin Competition.

Swiss violinist Edna Unseld was announced first-prize winner of the 2022 Il Piccolo Violino Magico Competition.

 

 

Korean cellist Hayoung Choi received first prize at the 2022 Queen Elisabeth International Cello Competition.

French violist Antoine Tamestit was awarded Germany’s 2022 Hindemith Prize.

Violist Hayang Park was first-prize winner of the fifth Tokyo International Viola Competition.

Violinists Lois Muntean, Tareq Matar, and Katharina Strepp were the first-prize winners in their respective age groups at the Kloster Schöntal International Violin Competition.

Violinist Dumitru Pocitari won first prize at the 2022 Classic Strings Violin Competition.

Cellist Michał Balas won first place at the 2022 Classic Strings Cello Competition

Japanese-Dutch violist Takehiro Konoe received first prize at the Oskar Nedbal Viola Competition.

Double bassist Kebra-Seyoun Charles was awarded first place at the 2022 Sphinx Competition

 

 

Polish pianist Mateusz Krzyżowski was awarded first prize at Poland’s 2022 Paderewski Piano Competition.

Ukrainian pianist Illia Ovcharenko was awarded first prize at the 2022 Honens International Piano Competition.

Canadian pianist Kevin Chen was awarded the top prize at Switzerland’s Concours de Genève.

Austrian cellist Julia Hagen was presented with the annual “Beethoven Ring” award from the Bürger Für Beethoven (Citizens for Beethoven) association.

Russian cellist Ivan Skanavi was awarded first prize at the 2022 Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann International Cello Competition.

Spanish double bassist David Santos Luque was awarded first prize at the 2022 J.M. Sperger International Bass Competition.

Pianist Victoria Han was awarded first prize at the Dallas Symphony’s Lynn Harrell Concerto Competition.

Conductor Alvin Ho received first prize at the 2022 Princess Astrid International Music Competition.

Naomi Woo became the first female conductor to receive the Canada Council’s Virginia Parker Prize.

The WindSync ensemble was awarded the Ann Divine Educator Award of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association

British composer Julian Anderson was awarded the Grawemeyer Composition Award.

Double bassist Kebra-Seyoun Charles, cellist Alexander Hersh, bassoonist Eleni Katz, and the KOE Duo were awarded as Young Performers Career Advancement artists of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals.

German cellist Philipp Schupelius was awarded the Fanny Mendelssohn Promotional Prize.

Violinist Seohyun Kim was the first-prize winner of the 2022 Thomas and Evon Cooper International Competition.

Violinist Anne Luisa Kramb was one of the winners of the 2022 German Music Competition.

Swiss violinist Sebastian Bohren received the “Golden Bow” award from the Swiss Violin School Foundation.

Queensland’s JPMS Ensemble Volante (J Percussion Music School) was awarded the first prize and audience prize of Musica Viva Australia’s “Strike a Chord” Competition.

Flutist Eliza Shephard won the top prize at Australia’s 2022 ABC Young Performer Awards.

French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard was awarded Denmark’s Léonie Sonning’s Music Prize.

South Korean pianist Yunchan Lim won the top prize at the 16th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

 

 

Finnish conductor Tarmo Peltokoski won the Rheingau Music Festival’s Sponsorship Award.

Erin Wagner, Joseph Parrish, Chaeyoung Park, and Chelsea Guo were awarded first prizes at the 2022 Young Concert Artists International Auditions.

American bassist Endea Owens was named Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s MAC Music Innovator.

Cellist Johannes Gray won first prize at the inaugural 2022 World’s Biggest Stage Competition.

Kaneko Yuji, Pielaszek Piotr, Hayato Nagaishi, Slaviero Luca, and Etzler Bernd were the first-prize winners of the 2022 Mittenwald International Violin Making Competition.

Luthiers Mira Gruszow and Gideon Baumblatt were among the winners of the inaugural Philharmonie de Paris Lutherie Competition.

Fabienne Gauchet, Justin Hess, Mark Schnurr, Emilio Kusi Crabbé, Chiling Chen, Christopher Savino, and Mark Schnurr received the Double Gold Medal of the 2022 Violin Society of America Competition for instrument makers.

As first prize was not given at the 2022 International Joseph Joachim Chamber Music Competition, Trio Bohémo and Trio Incendio received joint second prize.

Cellists Joel Geniet and Vuk Simon Ovaskainen were both awarded first prize at the International Jeunesses Musicales Cello Competition.

Cellist Hyein Kim and pianist Otis Prescott-Mason were first-prize winners at New Zealand’s National Music Competition.

Korean cellist Jaemin Han was awarded first prize at the cello edition of the 2022 Isang Yun Competition.

Canadian cellist Bryan Cheng was awarded first place at South Africa’s 2022 UNISA String Competition and was the 2022 recipient of the Verbier Festival’s Prix Yves Paternot.

German cellist Constantin Siepermann was awarded the top prize at the Gustav Mahler Cello Competition.

Double bassist Nina Bernat received the Grand Prize at the 2022 Lillian and Maurice Barbash J.S. Bach String Competition.

The Spirea Quartet won first place at Switzerland’s 2022 Orpheus Chamber Music Competition.

Argentinian double bassist Juliàn Medina received the Grand Prize at the 2022 Bottesini Double Bass Competition.

British percussionist Jordan Ashman was awarded the top prize at the 2022 BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition.

Ismael Guerrero, Nikka Gershman-Pepper, Derek Louie, Daniel Rafimayeri, Miray Ito, Mariam and Amira Abouzahra, and Evren Ozel were winners of the 2022 Salon de Virtuosi Announces Career Grants.

The Barbican Quartet received first prize in the string quartet category of Munich’s ARD International Music Competition.

The Protean Quartet was the top-prize winner at the 2022 York Early Music International Young Artists Competition.

Germany’s Leonkoro Quartet won the first prize at the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition and the 2022 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition.

The Isidore String Quartet was awarded first prize at the 14th Banff International String Competition 2022 (BISQC) in Canada.

 

 

Peruvian conductor Dayner Tafur Diaz was awarded first prize at Belgium’s Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège Conducting Competition.

Canadian pianist Jaeden Izik-Dzurko won first prize at the Spain’s Santander Competition.

Violinist Jaewon Wee received first prize at the Washington International Competition for Strings.

Violinist Anna Agafia was awarded the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad Festival Prize.

Korean cellist Gaeun Kim was announced first-prize winner at the 37th Klein International String Competition.

Violinist Lina Nakano was awarded first prize at Japan’s Sendai International Music Competition.

Jazz cellist Tomeka Reid received a “Genius Grant” as part of the 2022 MacArthur Foundation fellowships.

Soprano Magdalena Kuźma, bassoonist Eleni Katz, pianist Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner, and the Galvin Cello Quartet were winners of the 2022 Concert Artist Guild Competition.

 

 

Conductor Bertie Baigent was awarded the Grand Prize at the Rotterdam International Conducting Competition.

Polish conductor Anna Duczmal-Mróz  was awarded the 2022/24 Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship (TACF).

Conductor Anna Sułkowska-Migoń was awarded first prize in the La Maestra Competition.

 

 

Korean composer Shin Kim was awarded first place at the 2022 Composition Competition of the Concours de Genève.

The Terra String Quartet was awarded the Grand Prize at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition.

 

 

Chinese cellist Jiayi Liu won in the eldest age category of the 2022 Antonio Janigro Junior Cello Competition

German cellist Lionel Martin was awarded first prize at the Ton & Erklärung Cello Competition.

The Paddington Trio was announced winner of the Royal Over-Seas League Strings and Keyboard Ensembles Prize.

Violinist Angela Sing Yin Chan won first prize at the NOMEA Competition — International Online Violin Edition.

Violinist Sanne Lam was named winner of the junior category of the Netherlands Violin Competition, while Isobel Warmelink was awarded first prize in its senior category.

Hungarian ensemble Trio Silhouette was announced first-prize winner of the Mixed-Media Goodmesh Concours.

Pianist Konstantin Emelyanov won first prize at the International German Piano Award (IGPA).

Viennese piano trio Ensemble N was named winner of the 2022 Boris Pergamenshikov Prize for Contemporary Chamber Music

Switzerland’s Trio Sheliak was announced the top-prize winner of Italy’s Filippo Nicosia Chamber Music Award.

Quartet Granitique won the first prize of the American Prize in Chamber Music Performance.

Duo Domo was named first-prize winner at the Concours International de Musique de Chambre de Lyon.

Cellists Sol Gabetta and Emmanuelle Bertrand were among winners at France’s Les Victoires de la Musique Classique awards.

Violinist Dorothea Schupelius and pianist Jelizaveta Vasilijeva were awarded the 2022 Fanny Mendelssohn Scholarship.

German violist Tabea Zimmermann was awarded the 2022 Culture Prize of the Gunter and Juliane Ribke Foundation

The Javus Quartett was awarded the 2022 Hans Gál Prize from the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and the Villa Musica Rheinland Foundation.

German tenor Jonas Kaufmann was named the inaugural recipient of the Corelli 100 award.

Conductor Herbert Blomstedt was awarded the 2022 Rheingau Music Prize.

Austrian composer Olga Neuwirth was named recipient of the 2022 Ernst von Siemens Music Prize

American composer David Serkin Ludwig was named winner of the Elise L. Stoeger Prize.

Ensemble intercontemporain and punk star Iggy Pop both received the 2022 Polar Music Prize.

British Composer Hannah Kendall was presented with the 2022 Hindemith Composers Prize.

The Blackbox Ensemble and Cramer Quartet were among the recipients of Chamber Music America’s (CMA) Ensemble Forward program.

Percussionist Chris Stock was named the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Orchestra Musician of the Year for 2022.

Maia Aramburú and Maureen Conlon-Gutierrez are among the winners of the Sphinx Organization’s 2022 MPower Artist Grant.

Composers Brett Dean, Joanna Marsh, Liz Dilnot Johnson, Tori Freestone, Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Rebecca Saunders, Hannah Conway, Laurence Crane, and Thomas Adès were winners at the UK’s 2022 Ivors Composer Awards in their respective categories.

Composers Sun Keting, Thomas Metcalf, Claire Victoria Roberts, and Ben Nobuto were selected for the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain’s (NYCGB) 2022 Young Composers scheme.

Composer Raven Chacon was awarded the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Music and is the first native American composer to win the prize.

The Félicité Piano Trio was awarded first place at the Leamington Music Prize hosted by England’s Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

The Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine was awarded the 2022 Duisburg Music Prize.

Germany’s Saarland State Orchestra received the German Orchestra Foundation’s 2022 Innovation Prize.
