Soviet-born violinist and pedagogue Elizabeth Gilels died on this day in 2008 - aged 88.
A student of Pyotr Stolyarsky, Ms Gilels was a former prize winner at the Ysaye International Violin Competition – and served a long-term teaching position on faculty at the Moscow Conservatory.
She was married to legendary violin virtuoso Leonid Kogan, is the sister of eminent pianist Emil Gilels - and the mother of pianist Nina Kogan and violinist and conductor Pavel Kogan.
