The WDR Sinfonieorchester in Cologne has announced the appointment of 38-year-old Romanian conductor Cristian Măcelaru as its new Chief Conductor
The WDR Sinfonieorchester in Cologne, Germany, has today announced the appointment of 38-year-old Romanian conductor Cristian Măcelaru as its new Chief Conductor - effective from September 2019.
A former 1st prize recipient at the 2014 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award, Cristian currently serves as Music Director of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and has previously served as Conductor-in-Residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
He will replace conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste, who will step down from the role at the end of the current season - after 9 years at the helm.
