Akiko Suwanai Receives Guarneri del Gesu Violin
The Japanese violinist received the long term loan of the 1732 "Charles Reade" Guarneri del Gesu violin from Japanese-American collector and philanthropist Dr. Ryuji Ueno
Suwanai was the youngest ever winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1990, and has received multiple awards including prizes at the Paganini and Queen Elizabeth Competitions.
Dr. Ryuji Ueno, M.D., Ph.D. and Ph.D., is an internationally recognized scientist, innovator, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is a passionate supporter of talented players at all stages of their careers.
Suwanai previously performed on the “Dolphin” Stradivari, which was recently returned to the Nippon Foundation. When Dr. Ryuji Ueno heard of this return, he knew that this could be an opportunity for her to discover a completely different sound world.
“I am having an exciting and inspiring time playing the Charles Reade del Gesu,” Ms. Suwanai said. “It gives me such pleasure and inspiration. I feel very fortunate to have met this instrument.”
