German violin virtuoso and composer Ferdinand David was born on this day in 1810.
A student of Louis Spohr, he served as Concertmaster of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig - and held a prominent teaching position on faculty at the Leipzig Conservatorium.
He is remembered in history for having given the premiere performance of Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor Op. 64.
