Shkolnikova was a former first prize winner at the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Violin Competition

Soviet-Jewish violinist Nelli Shkolnikova was born on this day in 1928.

A student of Lillia Kossodo and Yuri Yankelevich, she served on faculty at the Gnessin State Musical College, the Victorian College of the Arts, and the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

In the 1970s, Soviet officials restricted the Ukranian-born violinist to performances only in The Soviet Union and other Eastern bloc countries. Over a decade later, she relocated to Melbourne, where she passed away in 2010, aged 82.
